Description

Elaviroid is a genus of plant pathogenic viroids characterized by small, circular, single-stranded RNA molecules. Unlike conventional viruses, these pathogens lack a protein capsid and rely entirely on the host plant's RNA polymerase to replicate within the nucleus or chloroplasts, causing systemic dysfunction.

This pathogen primarily targets a variety of herbaceous crops, including commercially important vegetable species. Its impact on agriculture is significant, as it can reduce plant vigor, drastically lower fruit yields, and compromise the overall quality of agricultural products produced in both greenhouse and open field conditions.

The symptoms of Elaviroid infection are often subtle and can mimic nutrient deficiencies or environmental stress, making early detection difficult. Typical signs of the disease include:

  • Severe leaf curling or distortion;
  • Stunting of the entire plant structure;
  • Chlorosis and mosaic patterns on the foliage;
  • Delayed fruit development and quality degradation;
  • Excessive branching or abnormal apical growth.

Elaviroid spread is largely driven by mechanical transmission. In intensive cultivation systems, contaminated pruning tools, knives, and agricultural machinery act as primary vectors. Furthermore, the pathogen is frequently disseminated through infected propagation material, such as cuttings or seeds, allowing it to survive across growing seasons.

Management strategies focus exclusively on prevention, as there are no chemical pesticides to eliminate viroids. Key practices include sourcing certified disease-free seeds and seedlings, implementing strict hygiene protocols for equipment disinfection, and conducting immediate roguing of infected plants to limit further spread within the crop population.
