The causative agent of the disease is Elaviroid latensmelongenae, a specific type of viroid that acts as a plant pathogen. Unlike viruses, it consists of a simple circular RNA molecule without a protein coat, which hijacks the host plant's replication machinery to multiply, leading to profound systemic physiological imbalances within the plant tissues.
The primary host for this pathogen is the eggplant (Solanum melongena), although other members of the Solanaceae family can also be affected. The viroid is notorious for its ability to persist in a latent state, meaning that infected plants often show no clear symptoms for extended periods, making detection in commercial greenhouses particularly difficult.
When symptoms become visible, they typically manifest as severe stunting, leaf chlorosis, and crinkling.
