The Elderberry symptomless virus (ELSV) is a plant pathogen classified within the genus Carlavirus. As its name implies, this virus is characterized by a latent infection, meaning that host plants typically do not exhibit obvious disease symptoms, making field identification nearly impossible without molecular testing.
The pathogen is a systemic virus that colonizes the plant's vascular tissues. While it does not cause yellowing, mosaic patterns, or leaf curling, it silently influences the host plant's metabolism, competing for nutrients and disrupting normal developmental processes over the growing cycle.
It primarily affects plants of the Sambucus genus, commonly known as elderberries. The virus is predominantly spread through vegetative propagation using infected cuttings or via insect vectors, such as aphids, which transmit the viral particles during feeding on the host tissue.
The harm caused by ELSV is primarily economic rather than aesthetic. Infected plants often show reduced fruit yield, lower nutritional value of berries, and a general decline in long-term vigor. Over time, these infected elderberry bushes become less resilient to biotic and abiotic stresses.
