Description
Elm black spot, also known as elm leaf spot, is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Stegophora ulmea. This disease is commonly found on various elm species and can be a significant aesthetic and physiological issue for both ornamental and urban elm trees.
The primary hosts of this fungus are trees within the Ulmus genus. While rarely lethal to mature, healthy trees, it can cause severe stress in young specimens and significantly reduce the overall health and vigor of older elms if the infestation occurs repeatedly over several seasons.
The symptoms appear as small, whitish or yellowish spots on the leaf surface, which eventually turn dark brown or black. A key diagnostic feature is the zonal, concentric pattern within these spots. As the infection progresses, small black fruiting bodies called acervuli develop, which are visible to the naked eye, particularly on the upper leaf surface.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of the disease. High humidity and extended periods of leaf wetness during the spring and early summer facilitate the spread of fungal spores. The pathogen overwinters on fallen leaves, making sanitation a vital component of disease management in any landscape.
The impact of elm black spot involves premature leaf senescence and abscission. Defoliation occurring mid-summer forces the tree to utilize stored energy to produce a second set of leaves, which drains the reserves needed for winter hardiness and proper growth in the following spring.
Effective management and prevention strategies include:
- Strict sanitation by raking and removing all fallen leaves during autumn to eliminate the primary inoculum source.
- Pruning branches to increase light penetration and air circulation throughout the tree crown.
- Applying fungicides during the leaf-bud break phase if the previous year's infection was severe.
- Promoting vigorous growth through balanced fertilization and appropriate watering during dry spells.
