Actinidia emaravirus (Emaravirus actinidiae) is a viral pathogen known to infect kiwifruit plants. As a member of the Emaravirus genus, it causes systemic infection that disrupts the normal biological functions of the vine, often leading to reduced vigor and productivity.

The virus primarily impacts species such as Actinidia deliciosa and Actinidia chinensis. Once an orchard is infected, the virus can persist within the perennial tissues of the vine, making the plants a continuous source of inoculum for further spread within the growing season.

Symptoms typically manifest as chlorotic spots, mosaic-like patterns on leaves, and occasional leaf curling or distortion. In severe cases, the infected vines show signs of stunting, reduced fruit set, and poor development of the canopy, which directly translates to significant economic losses for growers.

The transmission of this virus is primarily mediated by eriophyid mites, which act as biological vectors. These microscopic pests transport the virus from infected to healthy tissues during feeding. Additionally, the human factor, such as the use of infected grafting materials or tools, plays a major role in its geographic spread.

Effective management strategies rely heavily on rigorous prevention. Since there is no cure for established viral infections, growers must focus on planting disease-free stock, strictly controlling mite populations through integrated pest management (IPM) practices, and implementing strict sanitation protocols when pruning or maintaining the orchards.
