Description

Emaravirus cercidis is the causal agent of the ringspot disease in Cercis species. This virus is a member of the Emaravirus genus, characterized by negative-sense single-stranded RNA genomes. It acts as a systemic pathogen that colonizes the vascular tissues, leading to long-term physiological stress for the host plant.

The primary host for this viral pathogen is the Cercis tree, commonly known as the Redbud. The disease is a significant concern for both professional nurseries and landscape maintenance, as it negatively impacts the aesthetic value of the trees by causing foliage deformities and preventing normal growth cycles.

Symptoms typically manifest as chlorotic rings, mottling, and mosaic patterns on the leaves. In some instances, infected leaves exhibit severe puckering or narrowing. As the infection progresses, affected trees may show symptoms of general decline, reduced canopy density, and a marked decrease in the number and quality of flowers produced during the spring.

The virus is primarily transmitted by eriophyid mites, which act as vectors during their feeding process on host tissues. Secondary transmission pathways include mechanical inoculation through pruning tools contaminated with infected sap and the unintentional introduction of the virus via the propagation of infected nursery stock or cuttings.

There is currently no cure for infected trees, making preventive strategies paramount. Effective management involves:

  • Sourcing certified disease-free nursery stock.
  • Implementing strict sanitation protocols, such as disinfecting pruning tools with 70% alcohol or bleach solutions.
  • Managing populations of eriophyid mites using appropriate miticides.
  • Removing and destroying symptomatic trees to prevent further spread in the vicinity.
