Description
Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) is a severe viral disease affecting cereal crops worldwide. While historically linked to the Tritimovirus genus, research increasingly associates it with the complex biological environment involving Emaravirus tritici. It is a systemic infection that interferes with the plant's physiological processes, leading to significant yield losses in infected fields.
The primary hosts of the virus are wheat, barley, and rye. It has an extensive host range, including various wild grasses that serve as reservoirs. These grasses bridge the gap between harvest and the emergence of new winter crops, ensuring the virus persists in the environment year-round.
Symptoms are characterized by the appearance of yellow streaks and mosaics on the leaves. As the infection progresses, the plant becomes stunted, with reduced tiller numbers and severe yellowing. In advanced stages, the plants fail to produce healthy heads, resulting in sterile or shriveled grain, which leads to total yield failure in severe cases.
Transmission occurs exclusively through the wheat curl mite, Aceria tosichella. These microscopic vectors acquire the virus by feeding on infected plants and transmit it to healthy tissue as they migrate. Environmental factors, particularly warm and dry autumns, favor the explosive growth of mite populations and their rapid spread to newly germinated winter wheat.
Management is centered on cultural practices, as there is no direct chemical cure for viral infections. Farmers must eliminate the "green bridge" by removing volunteer wheat and weeds weeks before planting. Implementing a timely planting schedule and selecting cultivars with natural resistance are the most effective strategies for minimizing the impact of this devastating disease.
