Description
Pea enation mosaic virus (PEMV) is a significant viral pathogen belonging to the Enamovirus genus. It poses a serious threat to leguminous crops worldwide, causing substantial economic losses by reducing both yield quantity and the nutritional quality of the seeds and forage.
The host range of PEMV is quite broad, including pea, fava bean, lentil, clover, and vetch. Perennial legumes often act as asymptomatic reservoirs, maintaining the viral inoculum throughout the winter and serving as the primary source of infection for newly planted spring crops.
Infected plants typically display clear symptoms such as mosaic patterns, translucent spots on the leaves, and the formation of characteristic leaf outgrowths known as enations. Severe cases result in significant plant stunting, shortened internodes, and a drastic reduction in pod set, rendering the plants unproductive.
Transmission occurs primarily through the pea aphid, which acquires the virus in a persistent manner. The aphid remains viruliferous for a significant portion of its lifespan, allowing the virus to spread rapidly across fields as insect populations migrate during the growing season.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to mitigate viral pressure. Key strategies include the selection of resistant or tolerant cultivars, implementing strict spatial isolation from perennial legume fields, and monitoring aphid populations to apply timely insecticidal treatments. Sanitation measures, including effective weed control, are also essential to limit viral spread within the agricultural landscape.
