Description
Pea enation mosaic virus (PEMV) is a destructive plant pathogen that affects a wide variety of leguminous crops worldwide. It is a bipartite virus that causes severe stunting and physiological distress in infected plants, significantly impacting yields and seed quality.
The host range includes peas, lentils, broad beans, and various species of clover. The virus relies on systemic infection to spread throughout the vascular system of the plant, causing widespread cellular disruption and altering normal metabolic processes.
Symptoms are distinct and often include leaf mosaic patterns, clearing of veins, and the development of translucent enations (outgrowths) on the undersides of leaves. Severe infections lead to leaf curling, pod deformation, and a general reduction in plant vigor, rendering the harvest commercially unviable.
Transmission occurs primarily through aphid vectors, most notably the pea aphid, in a persistent manner. Once the aphid ingests the virus, it remains infectious for a significant period, allowing for rapid and efficient spread of the disease throughout the field during the growing season.
