Description
Pea enation mosaic virus (PEMV) is the causative agent of a severe viral disease affecting various legume species. As a member of the Enamovirus genus, this pathogen relies on specific aphid vectors for transmission and systemic spread within the host plant, causing significant physiological disruptions.
The host range is primarily concentrated within the Fabaceae family. Common susceptible crops include garden peas (Pisum sativum), broad beans (Vicia faba), and various clovers. The virus survives between seasons in perennial weeds and forage legumes, which serve as a critical primary inoculum source for early spring infestations.
The diagnostic symptoms include the development of chlorotic spots, mosaic patterns, and the formation of characteristic enations—small, tissue-like outgrowths on the underside of leaves and stems. Infected plants typically exhibit severe stunting, leaf distortion, and significant pod reduction, leading to substantial yield loss.
Transmission occurs exclusively through aphid vectors, most notably the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum). The virus is acquired by the aphid during feeding and is transmitted in a persistent, circulative manner. Once the insect acquires the virus, it remains infectious for the remainder of its life, allowing it to spread the disease across the field effectively.
Integrated pest management is the primary strategy for control. This includes establishing buffer zones between new pea plantings and older perennial legume fields, applying systemic insecticides to control aphid populations during the early stages of crop development, and selecting resistant or tolerant commercial varieties to mitigate the impact of infection.
