Description

The Endornaviridae family consists of distinct RNA viruses that maintain persistent, long-term infections within host plants. These viruses are often characterized by their asymptomatic nature, meaning they can thrive within the host cells for the entire lifecycle without causing obvious necrotic or chlorotic symptoms.

The causal agents are classified as viruses that utilize a vertical transmission pathway, moving from parent plants to offspring via seeds and pollen. This specific mode of transmission makes the management of Endornaviridae challenging, as the infection is internal and cannot be controlled by conventional foliar pesticide applications.

These viruses affect various economically significant crops, including rice, common beans, peppers, and various fruit trees. While they do not usually lead to mass mortality of crops, they can cause subtle physiological changes, such as reduced vigor, altered seed composition, and decreased nutritional value of the harvested produce.

Environmental conditions and climate do not directly trigger the disease in the same way they do for fungal pathogens, as the virus is already present within the plant genome or cytoplasm. The spread is primarily facilitated by global agricultural trade and the movement of infected germplasm between different growing regions.

Harmfulness is expressed as chronic depletion of the plant's resources. Control strategies emphasize exclusion rather than cure:

  • Rigorous testing of seeds and propagation material using molecular techniques like RT-PCR.
  • Quarantine protocols for the international exchange of plant breeding lines.
  • Developing virus-free mother plants through meristem culture and heat treatment.
  • Continuous surveillance of seed production fields to identify and rogue infected cultivars.
