The Broad bean wilt virus (Fabavirus alphaviciae) is a significant plant pathogen classified within the Fabavirus genus of the Secoviridae family. It is known to cause severe systemic infections in a wide range of economically important crops, frequently leading to substantial yield reductions and loss of quality in agricultural production.
This virus has a broad host range, primarily affecting legume species such as fava beans (Vicia faba), peas, and beans. Furthermore, it is a problematic pathogen for various vegetable and ornamental crops, including tomatoes, spinach, parsley, and lettuce. The ability of the virus to persist in diverse hosts makes its management particularly challenging in mixed cropping systems.
Symptoms of the infection typically include mosaic patterns on leaves, chlorotic spots, necrotic rings, and curling of the leaf margins. Plants infected with Fabavirus alphaviciae often exhibit stunted growth, shortened internodes, and a reduced number of fruits or pods, which directly impacts the commercial value of the harvested produce.
The virus is primarily transmitted by aphids in a non-persistent manner, meaning that the insect acquires the virus during a brief feed on an infected plant and immediately transmits it to a healthy one. Given this rapid mode of transmission, the virus can spread quickly through a field, especially if aphid populations are high and sources of inoculum are present in surrounding weeds.
Effective prevention and control strategies focus on reducing the transmission pressure and removing the virus reservoir. Farmers are advised to implement rigorous weed control, monitor and manage aphid populations using targeted insecticide applications, and utilize certified healthy seeds. Maintaining appropriate field sanitation and crop rotation schedules is also essential to reduce the likelihood of early-season infection.
