Fabavirus persicae is a viral pathogen classified within the Fabavirus genus, primarily affecting stone fruit trees. This virus causes systemic infections that impair the physiological performance of the host, leading to significant economic losses in commercial fruit production. It interferes with the plant’s metabolism, often leading to stunted growth and reduced fruit set.
The primary hosts for this virus are species belonging to the Prunus genus, most notably the peach tree (Prunus persica) and nectarines. Once the tree is infected, the virus spreads through the vascular system, establishing a chronic state that persists throughout the tree's lifespan. The intensity of the symptoms can vary depending on the plant's cultivar and the local environmental conditions.
Symptoms of Fabavirus persicae infection manifest as distinct leaf patterns, including chlorotic mosaic, ringspots, and yellowing of the foliage. These symptoms are often accompanied by leaf curling, shoot tip dieback, and reduced leaf size. As the disease progresses, trees show signs of decline, characterized by poor vigor and diminished quality of fruit, which often becomes misshapen or develops spots.
Transmission occurs through several pathways, including the use of infected grafting scions or rootstocks, contaminated pruning tools, and insect vectors. Certain species of aphids or other sap-sucking insects act as carriers of the virus. Weedy areas surrounding orchards may also serve as reservoirs, facilitating the survival and spread of the pathogen to healthy commercial trees.

- Rigorous sanitation practices for all pruning and grafting equipment using appropriate disinfectants.
