Causal agent and disease type. Fabavirus vitis, commonly known as grapevine fabavirus, is a plant virus belonging to the genus Fabavirus within the Secoviridae family. It is a systemic pathogen that colonizes the vascular tissues of the grapevine, affecting the plant's physiological development. This disease is recognized as a significant viral infection that poses a recurring challenge to global viticulture.

Host plants and distribution. The primary host of the virus is Vitis vinifera and related hybrid rootstocks. The virus is primarily disseminated through vegetative propagation using infected grafting material. Additionally, its spread within vineyard blocks can be facilitated by specific soil-borne nematodes or mechanical transfer during viticultural operations, such as pruning, where tools contaminated with infected sap can transmit the virus.

Symptoms and signs. Clinical signs of Fabavirus vitis are highly variable and often non-specific. Infected vines may exhibit chlorotic mottle, leaf deformation, shortened internodes, and general stunted growth. In many instances, plants remain asymptomatic for long periods, which creates a significant risk for nurseries, as the virus can be unknowingly distributed through latent planting stock.

Economic impact. The economic damage caused by this virus is primarily due to reduced vine vigor and yield loss. Affected plants show lower photosynthetic efficiency, which leads to poor berry development, lower sugar accumulation, and an overall decline in grape quality. Over time, the cumulative impact leads to vineyard decline, necessitating premature replanting of the affected blocks.

Protection and prevention. Given that there is no cure for viral infections in grapevines, management relies exclusively on preventative strategies. Key measures include sourcing certified virus-tested propagation material, regular orchard health inspections, and managing potential vector populations in the soil. Any symptomatic plants should be identified, removed, and destroyed promptly to mitigate further spread throughout the vineyard.
