Description
Fijivirus is a genus of plant viruses within the Reoviridae family characterized by a double-stranded RNA genome. These pathogens cause systemic infections that manifest as severe developmental abnormalities, leading to significant economic losses in cereal production worldwide.
The virus primarily affects monocotyledonous crops, including maize, rice, and sugarcane. Once an infection occurs, the virus interferes with plant metabolism and hormone balance, preventing the crop from reaching its potential yield and quality.
Symptoms of Fijivirus infection typically include extreme plant stunting, shortened internodes, and dark green discoloration of the foliage. A diagnostic feature is the formation of small galls or enations on the veins of the leaves and stems, which is a direct consequence of cell proliferation.
The transmission of the virus is strictly mediated by specific insect vectors, mainly planthoppers of the Delphacidae family. The virus is acquired by the insects during feeding and persists in their bodies, allowing them to remain infectious for the duration of their life cycle.
Effective management requires an integrated strategy, as direct antiviral treatments for field crops are unavailable. Key measures involve planting resistant varieties, implementing rigorous weed control to eliminate alternative hosts, and applying systemic insecticides to manage the planthopper populations during critical growth stages.
