Oat fijivirus (Fijivirus avenae) is a viral pathogen classified within the Fijivirus genus of the Reoviridae family. As an obligate plant virus, it primarily colonizes the vascular tissues of its hosts. By disrupting the normal translocation of nutrients and water, the virus severely limits the metabolic capabilities of infected plants, leading to systemic stress and stunted development.

The host range is largely confined to the Poaceae family, with oats, wheat, and barley being the most economically significant victims. Additionally, various wild grasses serve as an essential reservoir for the virus, allowing the pathogen to persist through dormant seasons and re-emerge when conditions are favorable for insect vectors to feed.

Typical symptoms of infection include severe stunting, leaf curling, and chlorotic striping or spotting. Infected plants often exhibit an abnormal tillering pattern and a dark green coloration of the leaves. Reproductive structures are frequently malformed, resulting in the failure to produce viable grains, which directly impacts the economic yield of the crop.

Transmission occurs exclusively through insect vectors, specifically planthoppers or leafhoppers. The virus is acquired by the insect during feeding and persists within the vector, which can then transmit the pathogen to healthy plants over long distances. High temperatures and extended periods of insect activity significantly increase the spread of the virus within cereal fields.

Effective management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) to break the infection cycle. Key practices include the removal of weed hosts surrounding fields, careful timing of sowing to avoid peak vector population density, and the strategic application of insecticides. Research also highlights the importance of breeding and selecting resistant cereal varieties as the most sustainable long-term defense against Fijivirus avenae.
