Fijivirus digitariae is a viral pathogen belonging to the Fijivirus genus within the Reoviridae family. It is recognized as a significant threat to various grass species, causing systemic infections that interfere with the plant's normal growth, nutrient distribution, and overall development.

This virus primarily targets plants in the Digitaria genus (crabgrass), which often serve as primary hosts. However, it can also affect cereal crops if they are growing in proximity to infected wild grasses. The viral infection causes profound physiological shifts, often leading to reduced vegetative vigor and economic losses in forage and agricultural fields.

Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as severe stunting, leaf malformation, and chlorotic streaks or patterns on the foliage. In advanced stages, the viral activity triggers aberrant tissue growth, including galls along the leaf veins or stems, which impede the transport of water and nutrients, ultimately weakening the host plant significantly.

The transmission of the virus is primarily mediated by insect vectors, most notably planthoppers (Cicadellidae). These insects acquire the virus while feeding on infected sap and transmit it to healthy hosts. The disease thrives in warm environmental conditions where insect populations are high and host plants are abundant in the field margins.

Key strategies include the elimination of reservoir weed species to remove the source of the virus, and the application of insecticides to manage vector populations. Farmers should also prioritize the use of resistant crop varieties and implement crop rotation to disrupt the virus-vector infection cycle effectively.
