Description

The causative agent of Fiji disease is Fijivirus fijiense, a viral pathogen belonging to the genus Fijivirus within the Reoviridae family. It is a highly destructive viral disease primarily affecting sugarcane crops, leading to severe stunted growth and reduced sugar yields.

The host range is centered on sugarcane. Historically recognized for causing major outbreaks in Fiji, the virus causes systemic infection within the host plant. By disrupting physiological processes and tissue development, the virus prevents the plant from reaching its full agricultural potential, rendering infected crops commercially unviable.

Key diagnostic features include the development of galls on the undersides of leaves along the veins. Infected plants typically exhibit severe stunting, leaf stiffening, and intense proliferation of shoots, giving the plant a bushy appearance. In severe cases, the apical growth is completely suppressed, and the plant eventually dies.

Transmission occurs through insect vectors, specifically leafhoppers of the genus Perkinsiella. These insects acquire the virus by feeding on infected plants and remain infectious throughout their lifespan, spreading the disease to healthy plants within the field and to neighboring plantations during active feeding periods.

Effective management requires an integrated approach due to the impossibility of curing infected plants. The strategy focuses on disease prevention: ensuring the use of virus-free planting material, rigorous monitoring for the presence of leafhoppers, immediate rogueing of infected sugarcane stools, and the breeding of genetically resistant varieties to minimize economic loss.
