Description
Fimoviridae is a family of plant viruses characterized by a segmented, negative-sense single-stranded RNA genome. The most significant member of this family is the Fig mosaic virus (FMV), which serves as the type species and is globally recognized as the primary cause of viral disease in fig plantations.
These viruses specifically target fruit-bearing plants, with Ficus carica (fig) being the primary host. The virus is biologically transmitted by eriophyid mites, specifically Aceria ficus, which act as specific vectors. The dependency on this biological vector makes the management of the mite population a critical aspect of viral containment.
Symptoms of Fimoviridae infection are diverse and often manifest as mosaic patterns, chlorotic spots, and leaf distortions. In many cases, the leaf surface becomes marbled, and severe infections can lead to premature leaf drop, stunted development, and significant yield reduction, often rendering the fruit unmarketable.
The spread of the virus is strictly regulated by the life cycle and movement of its mite vector. Warm and humid conditions favor the proliferation of eriophyid mites, which can easily move between leaves or be wind-dispersed to neighboring trees. Human-mediated transfer through the movement of infested cuttings and nursery stock is a major factor in the global spread of the disease.
Current management strategies focus on preventing the introduction and spread of the virus within orchards. Because there is no chemical cure for systemic viral infections in trees, the following preventative steps are essential:
- Strict adherence to quarantine protocols for imported plant material.
- Use of virus-tested, heat-treated, or tissue-culture-derived propagation material.
- Implementation of an integrated pest management (IPM) program to control mite vector populations.
- Early detection and roguing of infected symptomatic plants to limit the secondary spread of the virus.
