Fusarium wilt is a severe fungal disease caused by various species of the Fusarium fungus. It is a soil-borne pathogen that invades the vascular system of plants, primarily the xylem, where it colonizes the plant tissues and releases toxins that cause wilting and systemic death.
A wide range of crops is susceptible to this disease, including vegetables such as tomatoes and melons, as well as field crops like cereals and cotton. The economic damage can be substantial, leading to total yield loss in heavily infested fields or greenhouses if left uncontrolled.
Symptoms typically manifest as chlorosis (yellowing) of lower leaves, stunted growth, and a dramatic wilting of the plant during the hottest part of the day. A diagnostic sign is the darkening of the vascular bundles within the stems, which can be observed by making a cross-section of the stalk near the base.
The development of the disease is highly favored by warm temperatures and moist soil conditions. The pathogen can survive for years in the soil as dormant structures, making eradication difficult. It spreads rapidly through contaminated irrigation water, infected seeds, movement of soil by machinery, or propagation tools.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Fusarium wilt due to the persistence of the fungus. Effective practices include:
- Planting resistant or tolerant cultivars as a primary defense.
- Treating seeds with appropriate fungicides prior to sowing.
- Rotating crops to break the disease cycle and reduce pathogen load in the soil.
- Improving soil drainage and maintaining optimal soil pH levels to discourage fungal growth.
