Description
Foveavirus duoasiaticum is a viral plant pathogen belonging to the genus Foveavirus within the Betaflexiviridae family. This virus infects a variety of agricultural crops, particularly stone and pome fruits, by compromising the vascular system and interfering with essential plant metabolic processes.
The virus primarily targets species within the Prunus genus. Once inside the plant, the virus moves systemically, colonizing leaves, shoots, and fruit-bearing branches. Because of its nature, it can persist in the host for its entire lifespan, continuously weakening the tree and predisposing it to further abiotic and biotic stresses.
Symptoms of an infection often include leaf chlorosis, mottled patterns, curling of leaves, and stunted development. In severe cases, growers may notice significant tissue necrosis on the bark, reduced fruit size, and premature fruit drop, which leads to substantial losses in both quality and quantity of the harvest.
The virus is primarily transmitted through vegetative propagation methods, such as grafting with infected scion wood, and via contaminated pruning tools. Additionally, certain insect vectors, such as aphids and eriophyid mites, can facilitate the spread by feeding on infected plants and then moving to healthy ones, acting as mechanical carriers of the viral particles.
Since there are no chemical treatments available to cure a plant once it is infected with Foveavirus duoasiaticum, prevention is the primary strategy for managing this disease. Key actions include using certified virus-free rootstock and scion material, enforcing strict hygiene practices for pruning equipment, and conducting regular pest control programs to reduce the population of potential viral vectors in the orchard.
