Description
Apple chlorotic leaf spot disease is caused by the Apple chlorotic leaf spot virus (ACLSV), a member of the Foveavirus genus. This virus is a major concern in pomology as it infects a vast range of pome and stone fruit species worldwide, leading to chronic infections.
The host range of ACLSV is extensive, affecting economically important crops such as apples, pears, cherries, plums, and apricots. The pathogen is widespread in both commercial orchards and nurseries, often causing asymptomatic infections in many host varieties, which complicates field diagnosis.
Symptoms are highly variable depending on the cultivar's sensitivity and environmental conditions. Typical signs include chlorotic spots, mosaic patterns, vein clearing, or leaf deformation. In susceptible cultivars, the disease can lead to growth stunting, reduced yield, and an overall decline in tree health and vigor.
Transmission of the virus primarily occurs through vegetative propagation using infected budwood or rootstocks. Unlike many other plant viruses, natural transmission via insect vectors is not considered a significant factor, making the movement of infected plant material the primary driver of disease spread.
Effective control strategies focus on exclusion and the use of certified virus-free propagation material. Integrated management involves regular testing of mother blocks using diagnostic assays like ELISA or RT-PCR, ensuring strict nursery hygiene, and disinfecting pruning tools to prevent mechanical transmission during routine maintenance.
