The causative agent of this disease is a virus belonging to the Foveavirus genus, within the Betaflexiviridae family. This pathogen is characterized by filamentous virions containing a single-stranded RNA genome. It acts as a systemic infection that interferes with plant metabolism, significantly affecting the health and productivity of host trees.

The primary hosts of Foveavirus unasiaticum are apple trees and related pome fruit species. The virus is capable of colonizing various tissues, leading to chronic infections that persist throughout the life of the plant. It is widely recognized in specialized horticultural regions where apple cultivation is intensive.

Symptoms often manifest as mosaic patterns, chlorotic spotting, leaf deformation, and stunted shoot growth. Because the virus can also persist in a latent state, infected trees may show no obvious external symptoms while still serving as a source of inoculum, which facilitates the silent spread of the pathogen within an orchard.
