Fuchsia latent virus (FLV), identified as a member of the Carlavirus genus, is a specialized plant pathogen that primarily affects species within the Fuchsia genus. As the name suggests, the virus often remains latent within the host, meaning the plants act as symptomless carriers, making it a significant risk in commercial nurseries and private collections.
The infection manifests through subtle leaf symptoms, such as mild chlorosis, mosaic-like patterns, or faint mottling. Because these signs are easily overlooked or misdiagnosed as physiological nutrient deficiencies, the virus can inadvertently circulate through vegetative propagation, as infected cuttings continue to show growth.
Transmission occurs through mechanical inoculation, such as pruning tools, handling, or grafting, and can also be facilitated by aphid vectors in a non-persistent manner.
