Oat mosaic virus (OMV), belonging to the Furovirus genus, is a significant pathogen affecting oat crops globally. This virus is characterized by its soil-borne nature, relying primarily on the obligate parasite Polymyxa graminis for transmission to the host plants via root infection.
The virus primarily targets oats, with infection occurring early in the growing season. The Polymyxa graminis fungus acts as a vector; its motile zoospores carry the virus and penetrate the roots of the host, facilitating the systemic spread of the virus within the plant tissue through the vascular system.
Symptoms typically appear as mosaic-like patterns, light green or yellow streaks, and chlorotic stripes on the leaves, aligned with the leaf veins. Infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, reduced tillering, and overall diminished vigor, which directly correlates with a reduction in both grain quality and total yield at harvest.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in disease development. High soil moisture content and moderate temperatures promote the activity and spread of the fungal vector. The resting spores of the fungus can survive in the soil for a decade or more, making the virus a persistent threat in infested fields.
