Japanese furovirus (Furovirus japonicum) is a viral plant pathogen belonging to the Furovirus genus within the Virgaviridae family. It is a soil-borne virus that relies on specific biological mechanisms to persist and infect host plants. The virus contains single-stranded RNA and is notable for its inability to be transmitted by insects, relying instead on a fungal vector that resides in the soil.
The primary hosts of this virus are members of the Poaceae family, specifically wheat, barley, and rye. By invading the vascular tissue of the root system, the virus systemic spreads throughout the plant, causing significant physiological disruptions. Economically, it poses a threat to cereal production globally, leading to reduced yields and inferior grain quality in susceptible cultivars.
Symptoms of an infection typically manifest as yellow mosaic, streaking, and chlorotic patches on the leaves. Infected plants often exhibit stunted growth and reduced tillering, which may lead to a uniform field depression that is easily noticeable during the tillering stage. In severe cases, the plant vigor is significantly compromised, leading to premature senescence and a drastic reduction in biomass production compared to healthy crops.
The transmission of Japanese furovirus is primarily facilitated by the plasmodiophorid fungus Polymyxa graminis. The virus persists in the resting spores of this fungus, which can remain dormant in the soil for several years. When environmental conditions become favorable, such as high soil moisture and cool temperatures, the zoospores of the fungus are released and infect the root hairs of the host plants, effectively transmitting the virus particles into the roots.
Management and prevention strategies focus on limiting the transmission potential of the fungal vector and increasing crop resilience. Key agricultural practices include:

- Implementing long-term crop rotation to reduce inoculum density in the soil.
