Description

Soybean mosaic virus (SMV) is a widespread viral pathogen classified within the genus Gammacarmovirus. It poses a significant threat to soybean production globally by inducing systemic infections that severely hamper the development and physiological health of the host plants.

The primary host for this virus is the soybean crop (Glycine max). The pathogen is highly efficient at infecting the plant through various vectors and contaminated seeds, making it a persistent challenge for farmers during each growing season. Once inside the plant, the virus replicates and moves through the vascular tissues.

Visual symptoms often manifest as mosaic patterns on the foliage, characterized by alternating light and dark green patches. Leaf crinkling, puckering, and severe stunting of the plant are common. In addition to vegetative damage, pods may be fewer in number and smaller in size, with seeds showing distinct discoloration or mottled seed coats.

The transmission of the virus is predominantly facilitated by aphids in a non-persistent manner. Even a brief probe by an aphid can successfully transmit the virus from an infected host to a healthy one. Furthermore, seed transmission is a critical factor, allowing the virus to be introduced into new fields or seasons from contaminated stocks.

Management of the virus relies heavily on cultural practices and genetic resistance. There are no direct chemical treatments to cure an infected plant, which makes preventative measures essential. Growers should focus on planting certified virus-free seeds and selecting cultivars with known resistance to local virus strains. Additionally, managing aphid populations and removing weed reservoirs near fields can significantly reduce the risk of secondary spread.
