Gammapartitivirus is a genus of viruses within the Partitiviridae family. These viruses are primarily identified as mycoviruses, which means they infect fungi rather than plants directly. However, they are highly significant in agronomy because their hosts are often major pathogens of crops, including various species of Fusarium and other soil-borne fungi that cause significant yield losses.

These viruses target a wide range of fungal hosts that inhabit agricultural soils and infect crops such as cereals, vegetables, and ornamental plants. By infecting the fungal mycelium, the virus alters the physiological state of the host, often leading to a phenomenon known as hypovirulence, where the fungus becomes less capable of infecting the target plant.

The symptoms of Gammapartitivirus infection in fungi include restricted colony growth, abnormal branching of hyphae, and reduced production of spores. In the field, this is not observed as a direct disease on the plant, but rather as a change in the severity or progression of the underlying fungal disease, sometimes leading to weaker fungal colonization of the crop tissue.

Conditions for the development and spread of Gammapartitivirus depend entirely on the activity of the fungal host. The virus is transmitted horizontally through hyphal anastomosis, where two fungal threads fuse, allowing the virus to spread between different strains. Vertical transmission via spores is also common, ensuring the virus persists in the soil or crop debris between growing seasons.

The economic impact is complex; while some studies suggest these viruses could act as biological control agents by weakening pathogens, they are not currently used as commercial pesticides. Standard protection measures include traditional agronomic practices such as crop rotation, sanitation of plant material, and the application of fungicides to manage fungal populations effectively regardless of their viral status.
