Gammapartitivirus gremmeniellae is a specific mycovirus that infects the fungus Gremmeniella abietina. This fungus is a well-known pathogen responsible for Scleroderris canker, a destructive disease affecting various species of conifers, particularly pines, in the northern hemisphere.
Biologically, this virus is a double-stranded RNA virus belonging to the Partitiviridae family. Unlike typical plant pathogens that target leaf or root tissues, this virus is an intracellular parasite of the fungal mycelium, making it a subject of research in the field of forest pathology and mycology.
The host range is strictly limited to the fungal species Gremmeniella abietina. The virus spreads horizontally between fungal hyphae through anastomosis, meaning it requires direct physical contact between infected and healthy fungal mycelium to propagate within a population.
