Gammaproteobacteria represent a significant group of Gram-negative bacteria that includes many of the most destructive phytopathogens. Major genera like Pseudomonas, Xanthomonas, and Pectobacterium are responsible for serious vascular and soft-rot diseases that cause severe economic losses in global agriculture.

These pathogens attack a vast array of crops, ranging from vegetables like tomatoes and potatoes to fruit trees and ornamental plants. Their ability to survive in soil, water, and plant debris makes them particularly difficult to eradicate once they have been introduced into a field or greenhouse environment.

Symptoms of infection are diverse, manifesting as water-soaked spots on foliage, systemic wilting, and aggressive tissue decay. In many cases, the bacteria secrete enzymes that degrade cell walls, leading to soft rot that can destroy the entire structure of the plant or fruit within a few days under favorable conditions.

Once inside, they move systemically through the plant's vascular system, quickly colonizing the tissues.

Managing Gammaproteobacteria requires a strict focus on prevention, as curative treatments are often ineffective once symptoms appear. Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, such as using pathogen-free seeds, implementing crop rotation, disinfecting agricultural equipment, and controlling insect populations, are essential for maintaining crop health.
