Geplafuvirales is an order of viruses that, according to the current ICTV classification, encompasses a range of pathogens affecting higher plants. These viruses are characterized by a single-stranded RNA genome and a complex replication strategy within host cells. As a relatively new taxonomic group in phytovirology, it requires vigilant observation in agricultural settings due to the often latent or mild initial nature of the infections.
The type of disease caused is a virosis. The pathogen enters plant tissues mechanically, through physical wounds, or via vectors such as aphids, leafhoppers, or nematodes. Once the virus penetrates the host, it utilizes the phloem to move systemically throughout the plant, leading to a comprehensive infection of all vegetative and reproductive organs.
The host range of Geplafuvirales includes various vegetable crops, fruit trees, and ornamental plants. Symptoms are frequently observed in tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, and legumes. In many cases, weeds within or near the field serve as alternative hosts, acting as reservoirs for the virus during the off-season and facilitating the spread to commercial crops.
Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as follows:
- Mosaic patterns on leaf blades with alternating light and dark green areas.
- Leaf deformation, curling, and overall stunted growth (dwarfing).
- Chlorosis or necrosis of stems and leaf veins.
- Significant reduction in yield and overall plant vigor.
Protection and preventive measures are strictly based on phytosanitary management. Since there is no curative treatment for viral diseases in plants, the primary approach involves controlling vector populations using appropriate insecticides, eliminating weed reservoirs, and using certified virus-free seeds and seedlings. Maintaining high standards of hygiene and disinfecting pruning tools after each use is essential to prevent mechanical transmission.
