It is categorized as a necrotic disease that specifically targets the succulent stems and leaves of the host plant. The pathogen invades the plant tissues, leading to cell death and the subsequent browning or blackening of infected parts.

Susceptible Crops. The primary host for this pathogen is the cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon). While it is most frequently observed in commercial cranberry bogs, it can also affect wild bog cranberry populations. The disease is particularly problematic in intensive cultivation systems where high humidity and density are maintained to optimize fruit production.

Symptoms and Signs. The disease manifests as dark, necrotic lesions on emerging shoots and foliage. As the fungus progresses, these lesions can girdle the stems, causing the tips to curl, blacken, and eventually die off, which gives the plant a scorched appearance. Under high humidity, minute, dark fruiting bodies of the fungus may emerge from the infected tissue, confirming the presence of the pathogen.

Development and Spread. The life cycle of Gibbera vacciniicola is highly dependent on environmental moisture. Rainfall, heavy dew, and high atmospheric humidity promote the dispersal of spores, which are typically spread via splashing water or wind currents. Poor air circulation within dense cranberry beds creates a microclimate conducive to rapid infection, allowing the fungus to spread quickly through the field.

Damage and Management. If left unmanaged, the blight can cause significant crop losses by reducing vegetative vigor and destroying potential flowering sites for the following season. Effective management strategies involve a combination of cultural and chemical interventions:

  • Pruning and removing infected plant debris to reduce the inoculum level in the field.
  • Managing plant density to facilitate better airflow and faster drying of foliage.
  • Implementing precise irrigation practices to minimize prolonged periods of wetness.
