Description
Grablovirus silvestris is a viral pathogen responsible for the condition commonly referred to as the «witches' broom» effect. This viral infection disrupts the plant's hormonal balance, causing a systemic physiological disorder that leads to excessive, disorganized shoot proliferation and severe stunted growth.
The virus affects various woody plant species, including forest trees and ornamental crops. It is particularly damaging in nurseries, where the high concentration of host plants and constant human interaction facilitate the rapid spread of the virus through contaminated equipment and nursery practices.
Typical symptoms include the formation of dense clusters of thin, stunted, and distorted branches that originate from a single point. Infected plants exhibit leaf chlorosis, curling, and a significant reduction in leaf size, which leads to reduced photosynthesis and a weakened state of the affected woody host.
Transmission of Grablovirus silvestris occurs primarily through vegetative propagation of infected stock and mechanical transmission by non-disinfected pruning tools. Additionally, certain hemipteran insects, such as aphids and leafhoppers, serve as vectors, acquiring the virus from infected tissues and inoculating healthy plants during feeding.
Management of this disease is focused on sanitation and prevention. Since there is no effective chemical cure for the virus, all symptomatic plants should be identified, removed, and destroyed. Maintaining tool hygiene using antiviral disinfectants and sourcing certified, virus-free planting materials remain the most critical components of long-term disease control.
