Description

Grapevine leafroll disease is one of the most widespread and economically damaging viral diseases in viticulture globally. Caused by a complex of viruses including those in the Grablovirus genus, the disease specifically targets the phloem tissue of the vine, effectively disrupting the translocation of sugars and essential nutrients from leaves to the rest of the plant.

The primary host for these viruses is the Vitis vinifera grape species. While all cultivars are potentially susceptible, the severity of symptoms can vary significantly between varieties. Some rootstocks can act as asymptomatic carriers, serving as a silent reservoir of infection within the vineyard, which complicates early diagnosis and management.

The most recognizable symptoms appear late in the growing season. Leaves typically curl downward at the margins. On red-berried varieties, the leaf tissue between the veins turns a distinct deep red or purple, while the veins themselves remain green. On white-berried varieties, the leaves exhibit a yellowish or chlorotic appearance rather than red, often feeling thickened or brittle to the touch.

Transmission occurs through two primary vectors: the use of infected propagation material (cuttings or grafted vines) and the activity of sucking insects, primarily mealybugs and soft scales. Once a vine is infected, the virus becomes systemic and resides in the plant tissue for the remainder of its lifespan, making natural recovery impossible.

The impact on vine productivity is profound. Infected vines show reduced vigor, lower fruit yields, delayed ripening, and poor sugar accumulation, which directly compromises the quality of the wine. Because there is no therapeutic treatment to cure an infected vine, management focuses on excluding the virus through certified clean nursery stock, strict vector control, and the removal of infected vines to prevent further spread.
