Description
Granulovirus is a genus of viruses in the Baculoviridae family, primarily utilized in agriculture as a potent biological control agent. Unlike chemical pesticides, granuloviruses are specific pathogens that target larvae of certain Lepidopteran species, making them an essential tool in sustainable agriculture.
The primary hosts affected by this virus are various orchard pests, most notably the codling moth (Cydia pomonella). When the larvae ingest the virus particles via contaminated plant tissue, the virus dissolves in the alkaline gut environment of the insect, initiating a lethal infection process.
Symptoms of granulovirus infection in larvae include a rapid decline in feeding activity, lethargy, and eventual tissue degradation. Once the larva dies, it liquefies, releasing a new load of viral particles back onto the foliage, which provides a secondary wave of protection for the remaining crop canopy.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the efficacy of granulovirus applications. Because the virus is sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which degrades the protein capsule, field applications are strictly recommended during dusk or overcast conditions to ensure maximum viral stability.
The economic value of using granuloviruses lies in their safety for non-target species, including pollinators and humans. By integrating these viruses into a regular pest management schedule, growers can effectively reduce chemical reliance and maintain high-quality fruit production free from toxic residues.
