Grapevine ajinashika is a severe systemic disease affecting grapevines, characterized by viral or phytoplasma-like infection patterns. The disease significantly impairs the vascular system, preventing the efficient translocation of nutrients, which leads to stunted growth and a general decline in the physiological health of the vine.

The primary host for this pathogen is Vitis vinifera. The disease is known for its high economic impact on viticulture, as it reduces yields and negatively affects berry development, making the fruit unsuitable for winemaking or fresh consumption. Once a vine is infected, the pathogen persists throughout the plant, making long-term recovery difficult.

Symptoms typically manifest as leaf curling, significant shortening of internodes, and the development of excessive, spindly lateral shoots, which often gives the plant a witches' broom-like appearance. Furthermore, leaves may exhibit chlorosis or premature reddening, signaling a major disruption in the plant's metabolic processes.

The spread of Grapevine ajinashika is primarily driven by sap-sucking insects, such as leafhoppers, which act as vectors. These insects acquire the pathogen from infected vines and transmit it to healthy plants during feeding. The disease can also be disseminated through the movement of infected plant material during grafting or propagation.

Prevention and control strategies focus on rigorous nursery certification programs to ensure only virus-free material is used for planting. On established vineyards, management involves systematic monitoring, the application of insecticides to manage vector populations, and the immediate rogueing and destruction of infected vines to prevent the disease from spreading throughout the vineyard block.
