Hordeivirus is a genus of plant viruses, with the Barley stripe mosaic virus (BSMV) being the most economically significant member. These pathogens are characterized by their ability to cause systemic infections in various graminaceous plants, leading to substantial physiological damage and reduced crop yields.

The primary hosts of this viral genus are cereals, including barley, wheat, rye, and oats. In addition to cultivated crops, several wild grass species can act as alternative hosts, harboring the virus throughout the year and acting as a source of primary inoculum for new agricultural seasons.

Symptoms of Hordeivirus infection typically manifest as distinct mosaic patterns, longitudinal stripes, or chlorotic streaks on leaves. In advanced stages, infected plants show stunted growth, reduced tillering, and shriveled grain, significantly impacting both the quantity and quality of the harvested produce.
