Description
Lychnis mosaic virus (an RNA virus belonging to the Hordeivirus genus) is a systemic plant pathogen primarily affecting species within the Caryophyllaceae family. The virus disrupts normal plant metabolism, leading to significant physiological stress and hindering the development of the host plant.
The primary hosts for this virus are plants of the genus Lychnis (campion) and Silene (catchfly). Because many of these hosts are perennial, the virus often persists within the rootstocks, ensuring its survival from one growing season to the next, which makes it a persistent issue in ornamental gardens and botanical collections.
The symptoms of the infection include chlorotic mosaic patterns on the foliage, striping, leaf distortion, and stunted growth. Infected plants exhibit reduced flowering and a decline in overall vigor. These visual manifestations not only decrease the aesthetic value of the plants but also indicate the underlying systemic infection that weakens the plant's defense mechanisms.
Transmission occurs largely through mechanical inoculation. Common agricultural activities such as pruning, division of rootstocks, or even handling plants can transfer the virus from infected to healthy tissue if the tools are not sanitized. Although some viruses are transmitted by insects, the mechanical route remains the most critical factor for the spread of Hordeivirus lychnis in garden environments.
Integrated disease management for this virus focuses on containment and sanitation, as there are no chemical cures for systemic plant viruses:
