Hydrangea latent virus (HLV) is a viral pathogen belonging to the genus Carlavirus that commonly infects various species of hydrangea. As the name suggests, the virus is characterized by its latent nature, often remaining asymptomatic in host plants while still persisting within the plant tissues.
The primary host for this virus is the hydrangea, specifically Hydrangea macrophylla. While the virus may not always cause rapid plant death, it represents a significant challenge in commercial nursery production, as infected plants serve as reservoirs for further spread through propagation.
Symptoms of the infection can include mild leaf mottle, chlorotic spots, or slight leaf distortion. These symptoms are highly variable and depend on environmental conditions and the specific cultivar. Often, the plant maintains a healthy appearance until environmental stress triggers a more visible decline.
The virus is primarily disseminated through the use of infected cuttings during vegetative propagation. Additionally, it can be spread by insect vectors, particularly aphids, which transmit the viral particles while feeding on the phloem of the plant. Mechanical transmission via contaminated pruning tools also poses a significant risk.
