Hypoxylon canker and dieback is a serious fungal disease caused by the pathogen Hypoxylon tinctor. This disease primarily targets deciduous trees, showing a strong affinity for species within the genus Platanus (plane trees), as well as various oak species, leading to severe branch and trunk damage.

The disease is characterized by a necrotrophic infection process, where the fungus actively invades and kills the host's vascular tissues. By attacking the cambium and the inner bark, the fungus inhibits the flow of nutrients, which directly leads to localized necrotic lesions and subsequent dieback of the affected branches.

Field symptoms often include sunken areas on the bark, discoloration, and the appearance of characteristic black, crust-like fungal fruiting bodies erupting through the bark surface. As the infection progresses, affected trees exhibit sparse foliage, yellowing leaves, and the progressive death of upper branches, commonly referred to as dieback.

Environmental stress is a primary factor influencing the development and spread of Hypoxylon tinctor. Periods of prolonged drought, extreme temperature fluctuations, and mechanical injury significantly predispose trees to infestation. The fungus produces airborne spores that are easily spread by wind and rain, infecting trees through bark wounds and open cracks.

Management of Hypoxylon canker requires a rigorous focus on preventive measures. Since no curative treatment is available for severe infections, the goal is to maintain tree vigor through proper irrigation, mulching, and the protection of bark from mechanical damage. Sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of infected wood, are essential to reduce the local inoculum density.
