Description
Idaeovirus is a genus of plant viruses primarily associated with the Raspberry Bushy Dwarf Virus (RBdV). This pathogen causes significant economic losses in berry production globally by infecting the host's vascular system, leading to systemic disease that affects the entire plant's development and fruit quality.
The primary host range includes raspberry (Rubus idaeus) and various blackberry cultivars. The virus can persist in the plant tissues indefinitely, often without immediate symptoms in resistant varieties, but symptomatic plants show clear signs of decline over time, reducing the longevity and commercial viability of the plantation.
Symptoms are often variable depending on the virus strain and plant cultivar. Common indicators include mosaic patterns, chlorosis, and crinkling of the leaves. In severe cases, the plant exhibits stunted growth, reduced internode length, and a dense, bushy appearance. Fruit set is frequently compromised, leading to small, crumbly berries that lack flavor and commercial value.
Transmission occurs through the movement of infected pollen by insects, such as bees, which spread the virus during the flowering period. Additionally, the virus is easily spread through vegetative propagation using infected root cuttings or canes. Root contact between infected and healthy plants in dense rows can also facilitate local secondary spread within the field.
There is no curative treatment for plants infected with Idaeovirus, making prevention the only viable strategy. Control measures rely on the use of certified virus-free nursery stock, careful rogueing of symptomatic plants, and maintaining strict spatial isolation from infested areas. Weed management and controlling plant competition are also critical to ensure robust plant health.
