Ilarvirus is a genus of plant pathogenic viruses that cause systemic infections in a wide range of agricultural and ornamental crops. The name of the genus is derived from "isometric labile ringspot virus," indicating their isometric shape, relative instability during extraction, and the typical ringspot symptoms they cause in infected hosts.

The causative agents are viruses with a genome consisting of single-stranded RNA divided into three segments. These viruses primarily affect stone and pome fruits, berry bushes, and certain vegetable and ornamental species. A well-known representative of this group is the Prunus necrotic ringspot virus, which causes significant damage to orchards worldwide.

Symptoms of infection appear as chlorotic spots, light streaks, distinct ringspots, leaf malformation, and fruit distortion. In severe cases, tissue necrosis, stunted shoot growth, and general decline of the plant occur, leading to significant yield losses and reduced fruit quality.

The primary modes of viral spread include vectors such as thrips, as well as transmission through pollen and infected plant material. Agricultural practices play a major role in dissemination; pruning tools contaminated with infected plant sap serve as efficient vehicles for the virus to move between healthy and diseased plants in the orchard.

Control measures are strictly preventative, as there are no direct cures for viral infections in plants. The key strategies include:

  • Using certified virus-free planting stock for new orchards.
  • Regularly disinfecting pruning tools after working with each plant.
  • Controlling insect vectors (like thrips) using appropriate insecticides.
  • Prompt removal and destruction of infected plants to limit the spread of the virus.
