The primary hosts of this pathogen are trees belonging to the genus Ulmus. Elm mottle virus primarily affects various elm species, which are commonly used in landscaping and forestry, leading to reduced vitality and poor development of the canopy.

Symptoms of the infection typically include chlorotic spots, mottled leaf patterns, and necrotic lesions on the foliage. In severe cases, deformation of the leaves and premature leaf drop are common, significantly reducing the aesthetic value and long-term survival prospects of the affected elm tree.

Transmission occurs primarily through the use of infected grafting materials or contaminated pruning tools.
