Description
The Fig chlorotic leafspot-associated virus (FCILV) is a viral plant disease assigned to the Ilarvirus genus. As an obligate parasite, the virus invades the host's vascular system, disrupting normal physiological functions, including photosynthesis and nutrient uptake, which results in stunted growth and diminished crop yield.
The primary host for this pathogen is the common fig (Ficus carica). The virus is distributed globally, posing a significant challenge to fig production in both Mediterranean climates and temperate regions where commercial cultivation is established.
The clinical manifestations of the infection include chlorotic spots on the leaves, which may be accompanied by necrosis or malformation of the leaf tissue. Infected trees often exhibit decreased canopy density and lower fruit quality, which can lead to significant economic losses for growers if the infection is widespread.
The virus is primarily disseminated through the use of infected vegetative propagation material, such as cuttings or rootstock. Additionally, mechanical transmission via contaminated pruning equipment is a critical pathway for spread within orchards, underscoring the need for strict hygiene practices during maintenance.
There are no curative chemical treatments for viral infections in plants. Therefore, management strategies are strictly preventative:
- Utilizing certified virus-free nursery stock for new plantings.
- Disinfecting pruning tools between trees to prevent cross-contamination.
- Rogueing and destroying symptomatic trees to reduce inoculum pressure in the orchard.
- Maintaining optimal soil and water conditions to support tree vigor and stress resistance.
