Hazelnut latent yellow virus (HJLV) is a viral pathogen belonging to the Ilarvirus genus. It specifically targets trees within the Corylus genus, including hazelnut and filbert. Known for its latency, the virus can persist within the host for years without showing obvious morphological changes, making it difficult to detect during initial orchard inspections.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are hazelnuts, which are economically significant nut crops. The virus is capable of colonizing the entire plant, affecting its physiological processes, which can eventually lead to reduced nut yield, poorer quality kernels, and a general decline in the tree's vigor and lifespan.

Symptoms are often variable and include chlorotic mottling, yellowing of leaves, and sometimes leaf distortion. In many cases, the symptoms only appear during specific phenological stages or under certain environmental stresses, leading to the virus being overlooked by farmers until the infection becomes widespread within the orchard.
