Lavender latent ilarvirus (LLCV) is a viral pathogen belonging to the Ilarvirus genus within the Bromoviridae family. The virus is recognized for its ability to persist in lavender plants without showing immediate symptoms, which makes the early detection of the disease in commercial nurseries extremely difficult.
The primary host for this virus is Lavandula species, particularly those grown for essential oil production. Once an area is infected, the virus can spread systematically, leading to long-term productivity losses and the decline of the plantation's health over several growing seasons.
Symptoms associated with LLCV include chlorotic spots, leaf banding, and general stunting of the plant. In many cases, infected plants show poor blooming and reduced oil yield. Because symptoms are often mild or mimic nutrient deficiencies, field diagnosis can be challenging without specialized laboratory testing such as ELISA or PCR.
Transmission occurs mainly through infected vegetative propagation material, such as cuttings or divisions taken from mother plants that already carry the virus. Mechanical transmission via pruning shears or other equipment during harvesting and maintenance is another critical pathway that facilitates the spread of the virus within a farm.
Effective management of Lavender latent ilarvirus relies on strict phytosanitary practices. Since no curative chemical treatments are available, producers must prioritize the use of virus-free foundation stock. Implementing rigorous cleaning and disinfection protocols for all cutting tools between plants is essential to prevent the mechanical transmission of the virus across the crop.
