Description
Prune dwarf virus (PDV) is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the genus Ilarvirus that primarily affects stone fruit trees. This viral disease causes systemic infection, which disrupts the normal physiological processes of the host plant, leading to substantial economic losses in commercial orchards and home gardens alike.
The virus has a broad host range within the Prunus genus. It commonly infects plums, cherries, peaches, nectarines, and apricots. Because the virus can be latent, trees may remain asymptomatic for years while still actively spreading the infection to neighboring plants through pollination or agricultural activities.
Common symptoms include stunted growth, reduced leaf size, and characteristic leaf deformations such as curling or crinkling. Affected trees often exhibit chlorotic spots or line patterns on the foliage, particularly in the spring. Fruit quality is severely impacted, resulting in small, malformed fruits and significantly lower yields compared to healthy counterparts.
Transmission of PDV is unique because it is effectively spread through infected pollen. Insects involved in pollination carry the virus from infected trees to healthy ones, making orchard isolation and site selection crucial. Furthermore, the virus is easily transmitted through vegetative propagation methods, including budding and grafting, if the scion wood or rootstock is derived from an infected mother tree.
Effective management focuses on prevention, as there is no cure for the viral infection once a tree is colonized. Growers should prioritize the purchase of certified virus-free nursery stock. Implementing strict sanitary protocols, such as disinfecting pruning tools between trees, and removing infected trees to reduce the inoculum load are the most effective strategies for maintaining orchard health and minimizing the spread of the disease.
