Description
Peach mosaic virus (PMV), belonging to the Ilarvirus genus, is a significant viral pathogen affecting stone fruit trees. This virus causes systemic infection, leading to physiological disruption within the host, which manifests as structural deformities and a substantial reduction in the quantity and quality of fruit production.
The primary hosts of the virus include members of the Prunus genus, such as peaches, nectarines, apricots, and almonds. Once a tree is infected, the virus spreads through its vascular system and persists for the lifetime of the host, turning the tree into a permanent source of inoculum for neighboring plants.
Symptoms are most visible during the spring growth flush. Infected trees display chlorotic mottling, mosaic patterns, and yellow spots on the leaves. Severe cases often lead to leaf crinkling, shortened internodes, stunted growth, and significantly deformed, bumpy fruit that lacks proper flavor and marketable appearance.
Transmission occurs through vegetative propagation, specifically when using infected scion wood or rootstocks for grafting. Furthermore, eriophyid mites serve as the main insect vectors, spreading the virus between trees. Mechanical transmission via contaminated pruning tools can also occur if rigorous sanitation practices are not followed during orchard maintenance.
- Use only certified, virus-free nursery stock for planting.
- Implement regular orchard inspections to identify and remove symptomatic trees.
- Strictly control populations of eriophyid mite vectors with appropriate acaricides.
- Disinfect all pruning tools between trees to prevent mechanical spread.
- Maintain orchard hygiene by eliminating wild Prunus species near the orchard.
The economic impact of this virus is severe, as it renders infected trees unproductive and prone to further decline. Yield losses can be substantial, and the lack of a curative treatment makes the management of this virus strictly dependent on preventive measures, including the early removal of infected plants to protect the health of the entire orchard.
