The causal agent of this disease is the Prunus necrotic ringspot virus (PNRSV), belonging to the genus Ilarvirus. As a systemic pathogen, it infects the host plant's vascular tissue, disrupting essential physiological processes and causing chronic stress that significantly impairs the plant's overall health and vitality over its lifespan.

The virus primarily targets stone fruit crops within the Prunus genus. This includes cherry, sweet cherry, peach, apricot, plum, and almond trees. In addition to commercial fruit species, several ornamental plants, such as roses, can also serve as hosts, making the pathogen a significant concern for both agricultural and horticultural industries.
