Impatiens necrotic spot virus

Impatiens necrotic spot virus (INSV) is a highly destructive plant virus that belongs to the genus Orthotospovirus. It is a significant concern for greenhouse growers globally due to its ability to cause widespread crop failure. Although early classification studies occasionally associated it with ilarviruses, molecular analysis has confirmed its position as a distinct tospovirus, which is characterized by its specific transmission mechanism.

The host range of INSV is remarkably broad, affecting hundreds of plant species. It is particularly notorious in the ornamental plant industry, impacting crops like impatiens, begonias, cyclamens, and gloxinias. In vegetable production, it causes severe damage to tomato, pepper, lettuce, and cucumber crops, leading to significant economic losses for commercial operations.

Symptoms of INSV infection are highly variable and can lead to misdiagnosis. Typical indicators include concentric necrotic rings, mosaic patterns, stunted growth, and vein necrosis. In many cases, infected plants show distorted foliage or necrotic lesions on stems and petioles. Because symptoms can mimic fungal diseases or nutrient deficiencies, laboratory testing is often required for definitive diagnosis.

Transmission of the virus is almost exclusively managed by the western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis). The virus is acquired by larvae feeding on infected tissue and remains within the insect throughout its life cycle. Once a thrips population is infected, they become permanent vectors, spreading the virus to healthy plants as they feed throughout the greenhouse environment.

Control strategies for INSV must focus on exclusion and vector management. Since there is no chemical cure for infected plants, removal and destruction of symptomatic individuals are crucial. Prevention strategies include rigorous scouting for thrips, the use of sticky cards for early detection, weed control to eliminate alternative hosts, and stringent sanitation protocols to prevent the entry and movement of infected plant material into the cultivation area.
